Today was an interesting day. Since I probably haven’t told you, I received a completely out-of-nowhere call from Waterloo to apply for a summer student position that suddenly opened up. WIthout even bothering to do research, I sent in my resume, and lo and behold, got the interview which happened this morning. Point of interest – the company is the one that Huston works at :O The interviewer actually noted that too, which was highly surprising. I thought I did pretty well for my interview, in the sense that I didn’t make a complete asshole of myself. Which is always a good thing! I would comment on the people myself here on this blog, but the Internet is a scary place nowadays, where corporations can trace your every step, and fire you if you happen to make fun of them while working for them. Ask in person if you really want to hear about them. Another funny thing was that the night before, I actually had a nightmare where I crashed into Jeff’s car at a gas station, and I couldn’t do anything to prevent it. All that resulted in a huge tired pile of me by noon time. As for whether I actually got the job or not… well, pray for me, please? Thanks.
My parents also decided today would be a good day to start mixing concrete and attempt to fix the entrance to our backyard. All I can say is, I see why they have machines to mix concrete nowadays. It was definitely brutal work. I collapsed in bed after lunch and didn’t wake up until it was time for work at doctor’s clinic. Oh, I didn’t tell you? I’m volunteering at a doctor’s clinic now. It’s a pretty good job actually, I feel like I’m not actually wasting my time and am actively contributing to the lives of others. I’d take that over money any day. (I won’t be saying the same thing 10 years later though, when I have people in my life I have to support!) I’m learning quite a bit about professional life, and it’s something I can seriously start considering.
One of the saddest things today at work though, was when I had a conversation with a woman patient while she was waiting for the doctor. It turned out that her apartment had actually burned down last month, and that she was staying with her husband at a homeless shelter right now. She lost a friend in the process too. Her landlord, and aforementioned friend, apparently took one look at the damage and just said, “F-, my insurance’s gonna double!” instead of asking whether they were all right. To top it off, her husband came down with a deadly condition last Thursday, which required thirty staples in his leg to stabilize and why she was at the clinic in the first place. Not for herself, but to pick up medicine for her husband. This really opened my eyes to the suffering of people outside of the crew I usually hang out with. Being a lawyer really seems like an opportunity to help people in need now. Indeed, I am becoming a friggin boy scout.
That’s pretty much all that happened today. How the hell have you been?
